Day 75 - Asuncion and Che

Asuncion sits next to me at city hall. The local government is leftist, and socialistic propaganda is required of all employees. All wear red, and most have posters advertising their political views plastered all around their desks. Today Asuncion put this picture of Che Guevara over his desk.

Asuncion is very well informed - he listens and reads the news everyday, and is always asking me intelligent questions about world politics and economics. Today we had an interesting discussion about whether it’s possible for a government organization to be non-political, knowing that every person working in that organization does have his or her respective political view.

I often criticize Asuncion’s affinity for socialism, connecting it back to the Soviet Union and various communist tyrants. He will then remind me of the many errors which the United States has committed, with such questions as, “which is the only country in the world which has ever attacked another country with an atomic bomb?”

As a result of such discussions, I’ve realized that my upbringing in the US caused me to have an affinity for democracy and an aversion to communism. And I am reminded of the Winston Churchill quote: “No one pretends that democracy is perfect or all-wise. Indeed, it has been said that democracy is the worst form of government except all those other forms that have been tried from time to time.” And now I think I understand a bit more clearly what he meant. We may criticize socialism and communism, but to assert that democracy would solve all the problems such forms of government cause is to propose replacing one batch of problems with another. Because of course the fundamental problem with any form of government is that its constituents are humans.
