Jefferson has been growing like a weed in the past few weeks, so his mom and dad bought him some new clothes this weekend. I met them on the bus on the way back to Torola today, and when I complimented Jefferson on his new outfit, his mom asked if I would take a glamour shot for them.

Jillian and Melinda met during a study abroad program in Mexico, and made fast friends. Jillian lived in California, so when Melinda decided to apply to Americorps, she chose an assignment in California so that she could be with her friend. She had applied to Americorps because she was having trouble being accepted to the Peace Corps. During their time together, Melinda convinced Jillian to give the Peace Corps a try. Jillian didn't have as much difficulty, and ended up leaving for Nicaragua a full nine months before Melinda made it to El Salvador. Dropping her friend off at Peace Corps staging in Washington, D.C., convinced Melinda to redouble her efforts, and jump through the rest of the hoops necessary to be accepted herself.

This past month, Jillian concluded her service in Nicaragua, and took a trip to El Salvador. Melinda dropped her off in D.C. a few days before she began her service, and just a few days ago picked her up from the airport in El Salvador at the end of her service.

I had a meeting at the US Embassy this morning, and on my back to the Peace Corps office I decided to walk instead of take the bus, so that I could get some exercise and see more of the city. As I neared the last intersection, I saw a generally abandoned parking lot full of Volkswagen Beetles. It turns out that the Central American Volkswagen club was holding a convention, and Volkswagens—Beetles, Golfs, Vanagons, etc—from Guatemala to Panama had convened at this nondescript San Salvador parking lot.

As I neared the entrance, I told myself I wouldn't go in unless it cost less than $2. But my self-discipline didn't stand up to temptation, and I bought a ticket for $3. The entrance fee included a free can of “SoBe Adrenaline Rush.” I drank the entire can as fast as I could, to see if it really would give me wings or turn me into the hulk. Nothing happened.

As volunteers, we receive just enough enough money for housing, food, and travel. If I stay in site, this money easily covers all of my expenses, with some left over. But when I travel to San Salvador, the money goes quickly. Staying in hotels, paying for cabs, and buying food at restaurants adds up. To cut costs, I stay at a $6 hostel instead of a hotel. I learned the bus routes and leave early, paying $0.25 for what can cost up to $7 a ride. And I eat at pupuserias instead of restaurants.

So today, at the end of my $0.25 bus ride, as I was walking back to my $6 hostel, I stopped and had dinner for $2.25. I was hungry, so I had five pupusas, accompanied by a deliciously over-sweetened mug of hot chocolate.

Luckily for my wallet, the bus routes reach every part of the city, there are plenty of cheap hostels, and a good pupuseria can be found on nearly every street corner.
