“Gringuisimo” (a play on “gringo,” a slang term for white Americans, and “chivisimo,” meaning “super cool”) is a group of volunteers with a repertoire of short theatrical works on various topics ready to present across the country for fairs, schools, community organizations, or any other gathering of living people. Topics including recycling, taking care of the environment, reproductive health, gender equality, leadership, decision-making, and healthy families.
Today I joined several of the charter members of Gringuisimo to present two plays in another volunteer's site nearby. Usually, a volunteer will solicit for a performance, then round up enough nearby volunteers to fill in the easy roles, while the charter members cover the tough roles.
The first play we presented was “The Life of Trash,” a conversation between anthropomorphic pieces of garbage about how to properly recycle and dispose of waste. The second was “The Lorax,” which is based on the Dr. Seuss book of the same title, and illustrates the devastating effects of deforestation.
There was a fair in Gabe's site while we were there, so there were plenty of people milling about. He had given everyone a head's up beforehand, so by the time we were getting ready to start, quite a crowd of people had gathered. The plays change a little bit each time, depending on who has which role, and there is always a fair amount of interaction with the audience, to keep things interesting.
In the first play, I had the role of the “disappointed junk food bag,” who had hoped to be reunited with his friends in the trash can, but found himself in dog poop instead. In “The Lorax,” I starred as a fish, who began life very happily, but as a result of deforestation had to drag myself overland to find cleaner water.
Despite the fact that darkness had fallen before we finished the second play, everything went well. The kids (and quite a few adults) laughed on all their cues, and seemed to remain interested throughout the plays.

This morning, in contrast to my experience on Day 92, I enjoyed a good cup of coffee. Last week on the way through San Miguel I stopped at the supermarket and bought a small bag of coffee. I picked the only brand that came in a bag with a one-way valve. The one-way valve is the only way to package coffee so that it doesn't get stale—it allows the carbon dioxide which the beans outgas to escape without letting any oxygen in.
I prepared it in the French press pot that I inherited from Bryan Dwyer, my former boss. I carefully measured two four-ounce scoops into the clean, dry pot, then added 16 ounces of water which had been allowed to cool a few seconds after boiling. I put the lid on the pot, then let it brew for about five minutes before pushing the filter down.
The finished product was wonderful.
For the next time, I won't let it brew quite so long, as the grind I've bought is rather fine, and brews quickly. Also, I won't make two cups, because that dose of caffeine really put me on edge for the rest of the day.
